Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher of Genre Fiction and New Pulp, recently announced the introduction of a new line of series and author focused imprints as a part of its Pro Se Single Shots product line. Pro Se Signatures features 40 authors who will either write a series or stories for their own ‘From the Pen Of…’ imprint that will be released as digital singles on a regular schedule. One of the Signatures authors is Gary Phillips, creator and author of ANGELTOWN, featuring Private Eye Nate Hollis, and the Ivan Monk mystery series.
Phillips’ series will be ONYX ADAMS, set to debut in September 2014 on a schedule of a new story every four months. The Son of Sam serial killer has been convicted, the Watergate scandal still reverberates and Funkadelic’s “One Nation Under a Groove” blasts from car stereos. The time is 1978. Freewheeling, kung fu-wielding, afro sporting private eye Onyx Adams has a 3rd floor office in the quaint Gibson building off of Hollywood Boulevard. The tenants include Mrs. Robles’ Secretarial School, a watchmaker, and the Ajax Barber College on the ground floor. Onyx is a dynamite chick in a mini-skirt or bell bottoms, whose beauty disarms, masquerading her insightful mind and strong sense of justice.
“I’m very pleased,” says Phillips, “that Pro Se’s Single Shot Signatures is giving me the opportunity to do a series of original short stories of my afro-wearing, crush velvet stylin’, kung fu wielding badass sistah private eye ONYX ADAMS. The setting is the social and political tumult of the 1970s. Not only will there be the influences of Watergate, hot pants, hemi’d out Barracudas, the Panthers, Warhol, Vietnam and disco in the stories, but New Pulp and the vibe of that era’s paperback vigilantes from the Dark Angel to the Baroness as well In the words of Don Cornelius, creator of Soul Train, ‘You can bet your last money, it’s gonna be a stone gas, honey!’”
Gary Phillips has penned short stories for Moonstone’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker Casebook, the Avenger Chronicles, the Green Hornet Casefilesand the recently released The Spider: Extreme Prejudice anthologies. One of his recent novels is Warlord of Willow Ridge which Booklist said of the work, “Phillips is a veteran crime novelist who creates a plausible post-apocalyptic scenario in which the safety of middle-class America can dissolve in a moment. Exciting, violent, and entertaining.” He also has out the ebook novella, The Essex Man: 10 Seconds to Death, a homage to ‘70s era paperback vigilantes. Additionally he is one of the editors for Pro Se's BLACK PULP volume, and any and all follow ups to that collection, as well as his PI character, Nate Hollis, first in comics, making the transition to new prose stories for Pro Se.
